What is DoxyPEP?
DoxyPEP is the use of doxycycline, an antibiotic taken after sex, to reduce the chance of developing certain bacterial STIs. DoxyPEP is most effective when taken within 72 hours after sex and should only be used under the guidance of a medical provider.
Current research shows DoxyPEP may reduce the risk of:
- Chlamydia
- Syphilis
- In some cases, gonorrhea
Who Should Consider DoxyPEP?
DoxyPEP is not a replacement for routine STI testing, condoms, or PrEP; it’s another tool that can be part of your sexual wellness plan. DoxyPEP may be an option for:
- Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men
- Transgender women
- Individuals with a recent history of bacterial STIs
- Patients who may benefit from additional STI prevention strategies
